Tracy is leaving the Morning Buzz

I’ve never been great with change. Perhaps that’s why I’ve stayed at the same employer for 22 years. But mostly it’s because I’ve really enjoyed my work. But change is coming and I couldn’t be more excited about it! After 17 years in TV news, and the last 5 1/2 in morning talk radio, I’m taking on a new challenge. I’m leaving The Morning Buzz on August 27th. I’ve accepted a new position as Digital Content Development Director for Forum Communications company, WDAY’s parent company. So, I’m not really leaving my employer. I’m just relocating to another division of the company.

When I’ve told family and friends about my new position, “Digital Content Development Director,” I get met with a blank look and maybe even a “huh?” I tell them this:  I’m going to be getting out into the community telling businesses, organizations, schools and groups about digital community publishing opportunities with our company. Normal, everyday people will be able to submit stories on everything from high school football  to their favorite vacation spots to Grandma’s recipes.  This information will flow into more than 30 newspaper and broadcast websites of Forum Communications Company which reach more than one million readers each month. Not only will you be able to blog through ”Area Voices,” we’re also setting up a new social networking feature so users can comment on blogs and friend each other. We’ll set up the capability to follow “topics” throughout all of our websites in our 4-state region.

It’s a little hard to grasp, I know, but once you see it in action you’ll realize it will change the way we deliver and share information. Now I get the fun job of convincing you just how awesome this will be. I think I’ll be part digital evangelist and part cheerleader. I better get out my old pom pons from high school.

What does not make me cheer is leaving my everyday work with some fantastic people at WDAY: my morning co-horts Erick Johnson, Adam Hagen, Daryl Ritchison, and Rob Kupec  and the other great people in radio like Christopher Gabriel, Erik Matson, Jay Thomas, Larry Nelson and Steve Tschida. And of course, the nice folks on the second floor in sales and management. I, too, will miss my TV news friends. But as I said, I’m not going far and I’m excited to be able to work with them all in a different capacity.

It’s been a blast waking up and sharing mornings with you for 5 1/2 years. Waking up before 5am wasn’t always easy, but listeners and guests who stopped in to chat always made it worth the effort!

Another Honor Flight and Helping the YWCA

Thanks to Beth Bouley and Erin Prochnow for stopping by the show today. Beth is one of the organizers of the Roughrider Honor Flight from Bismarck. The group has already sent about 300 WWII veterans to the WWII Memorial. Now they’re organizing a 4th trip. It’s set for Sept. 10th and 11th of this year. If you’d like to give a donation go to www.RRHonorflight.com or call Beth at (701)373-5416.

Erin is the executive director of the YWCA. She told us about a record they recently broke that no shelter wants to break. They hit their record for number of women and children staying at the shelter in one night. 83 women and children are housed at the shelter most escaping domestic violence. With the added numbers comes a need for more stuff. The shelter is accepting donations of toiletries, diapers, hygiene products, new underwear, pillows, and even a washer and dryer. For more information and a full list of their needs go  to www.ywcacassclay.org

Rest in Peace Lyle Romine

I wanted to post Lyle Romine’s obituary from the Forum on our blog today. See below.

I had to smile when I read about Lyle’s funeral plans. Lyle didn’t want a funeral. He wanted a party. Good call and so fitting for this wonderful man.

I worked on and off with Lyle since 1986, but really got to know him when I made the move from television to radio in 2005. Like all of you listeners, I knew what a great broadcaster he was. His ag reports on 970WDAY were relevant, professional and accurate. I marveled that he never seemed to make a mistake. I’m sure he would argue. But I was constantly amazed by his abilities. But what I came to adore about Lyle was something perhaps not as obvious to all of the listeners. Lyle got it. By "it", I mean life. While a consumate professional, Lyle never seemed to take life or himself too seriously. He knew what was important. His family, friends and fun! I loved talking with Lyle about golf. It was one of his passions. I’m sure his golfing buddies could write a book about their hours with Lyle. Lyle seemed to savor all that life had to offer. I can’t imagine he had a lot of regret in his too short life.

In fact, shortly after Lyle was diagnosed with lung cancer I remember talking with him on the phone. He was hopeful but realistic about his prognosis. And when cancer began taking over a few weeks ago, Lyle told me he was at peace. He said he was in a good place with his family beside him. He said, "Well Trace, we all have to go sometime. This is just my time."

Well, dear Lyle, I plan to be at your party on the 31st. We will toast to you and never forget the joy of knowing you!

(HERE’S HIS OBITUARY)

Lyle Eugene Romine

(6/2/51 – 7/15/10)

Lyle was the eldest of Homer and Doris Romine’s four children. Born and raised in central North Dakota, Lyle attended radio school in Minneapolis before returning to Devils Lake in 1971 to begin his career. Lyle and Terrie married in 1973 and their son Jesse was born in 1980. The Romine’s moved to the Fargo area in 1981, making their home north of Oxbow in 1988. In 2005, Jesse added Anita to the family. Lyle loved to golf, fish, work on diamond willow, talk farm/ranch news on the American Ag Network, and laugh with family and friends. Lyle is survived by everyone whose life he touched. In lieu of a funeral, Lyle requested that his family and friends gather to celebrate his memory. This celebration of Lyle Romine’s life will take place at Lyle & Terrie’s (4989 Klitzke Drive, Hickson 58047) on Saturday, July 31st. The social hour will start at 4 p.m. and the commemoration at 5 p.m.

Pickleball comes to Moorhead

Have you ever  heard of Pickleball? Maybe not, but it’s the fastest growing sport in America for people ages 16-90.

It’s a cross between tennis and ping pong using a whiffle ball and a large paddle on a small court. Check out more info at www.usapa.org.

Bill and Marion Krueger of Moorhead heard about the sport while wintering in California. They loved it and wanted to bring in back home to the midwest.

They’ve spoken with Moorhead Parks and Rec about setting up a league for people interested in playing. If you’d like to join them or learn more about Pickleball call Bill at 701-412-6967 or email him at billkrueger@gomoorhead.com.

Bataan Death March survivor

Colonel Glenn Frazier has a story to tell. At the age of 16, he lied about his age to get into the army. Before he knew it he was sent to the Phillipines and months later would participate in one of the most horrific events of World War II. Thousands did not survive the harrowing Bataan Death March. But Frazier did, only to survive another 3 1/2 years in a Japanese POW camp.

He’s written a book entitled, "Hell’s Guest."

He’ll share his story this Wednesday, June 23rd at 6pm at the Moorhead High School Auditorium. Admission is $10. He’ll speak for 45 minutes and take questions. He’ll also sell his book and autograph copies.

Brenda Rehder benefit

Thanks to Brenda Rehder and Victor Gelking for stopping into chat on the show today. Vic is hosting a benefit this weekend (May 15-16th) to help raise money for Brenda.

In 2006, Brenda was diagnosed with Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia, an inherited neurological disorder marked by progressive difficulty walking due to weak and stiff muscles. There is no cure to prevent, stop or cure the disease.

When Vic, who is a pilot, heard her story he wanted to help. So this Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 6pm he’s hosting a fundraiser featuring a game feed, roast beef sandwiches, airplane rides and a silent auction. The address is 1631 19th Avenue North just west of the air museum.

If you can’t make it to the fundraiser but would like to donate, you can send donations to: Brenda Rehder Benefit Fund, c/o State Bank and Trust, 3100 13th Ave, So, Fargo, ND, 58103.
